فازَ مَنْ غَلَبَ هَواهُ، ومَلَكَ دَواعِيَ نَفْسِهِ۔
He who overcomes his vain desire and controls the urges of his [carnal] soul is successful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
He who overcomes his vain desire and controls the urges of his [carnal] soul is successful.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of self-control and self-discipline in achieving success in this world and the hereafter.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ghalaba) "غَلَبَ" means to overcome or conquer, while (hawah) "هَوَاهُ" refers to vain desires or whims. The word (malaka) "مَلَكَ" means to possess or control, and (dawa'iya) "دَوَاعِيَ" refers to the urges or inclinations of the soul.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Qasas (28:56),
Indeed, you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.
This verse highlights the importance of overcoming our own desires and submitting to the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain true success.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,
Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.
This verse emphasizes the need to control our desires and inclinations, as indulging in them excessively can lead to hardship and difficulties in life. By exercising self-control, we align ourselves with the divine will and experience ease and tranquility.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to overcome our vain desires and control the urges of our souls. This self-discipline leads to success in both worldly matters and the hereafter. When we conquer our whims and align our actions with the teachings of Islam, we attain a higher level of spiritual and moral excellence.
For example, let us consider a person who struggles with anger management. If they allow their anger to control their actions, they may harm others and damage relationships. However, if they overcome their anger and control their impulses, they can maintain harmonious relationships and find success in their personal and social life.
Similarly, a person who is addicted to material possessions may constantly chase after wealth and possessions, neglecting their spiritual growth and the well-being of others. However, if they conquer their desire for material wealth and focus on the greater purpose of life, they can find contentment and success in both this world and the hereafter.
The consequences of not overcoming our vain desires and controlling our urges can be detrimental. We may become slaves to our own desires, leading to a life of dissatisfaction, regret, and spiritual emptiness. By exerting self-discipline, we free ourselves from the shackles of our carnal desires and elevate our souls to a higher level of consciousness and spirituality.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of self-control and self-discipline in achieving success. By overcoming our vain desires and controlling the urges of our souls, we align ourselves with the divine will and experience true success in this world and the hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to conquer our whims and attain success in all aspects of our lives.
