رُبَّما أُتِيْتَ مِنْ مَأْمَنِكَ۔
Sometimes you may be attacked from within your sanctuary.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: War, Soldiers And Armies)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
رُبَّما أُتِيْتَ مِنْ مَأْمَنِكَ۔
This can be translated as:
Sometimes you may be attacked from within your sanctuary.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds deep wisdom and carries important lessons for all Muslims.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (utita) "أُتِيْتَ" is derived from the root word (ata) "أتى", which means to come or to approach. It signifies the act of being attacked or confronted. The word (ma'manika) "مَأْمَنِكَ" is derived from the root word (aman) "أمن", which means security or sanctuary. It refers to a place of safety and protection.
To understand the wise message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 208:
O you who have believed, enter into peace completely and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking complete peace and security, both externally and internally. It warns against following the path of Satan, who seeks to disrupt our peace and attack us from within.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 30, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse highlights the plot of the disbelievers against the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Muslims. It serves as a reminder that even in the most secure of places, attacks can come from unexpected sources.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that we should not be complacent in our sense of security. Just because we may find ourselves in a place of safety, physically or spiritually, does not mean that we are immune to attacks. These attacks can come from within our own communities, families, or even from our own selves.
For example, a person may be surrounded by righteous companions and immersed in a pious environment, but they may still be susceptible to the whispers of their own desires or the influence of negative external forces. This can lead to a gradual erosion of their faith and spiritual well-being.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to remain vigilant and constantly strive to protect ourselves from any potential harm. It urges us to be aware of the potential dangers that can arise even in the most secure of environments. By recognizing the possibility of attacks from within, we can take proactive measures to safeguard our faith, values, and principles.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
Sometimes you may be attacked from within your sanctuary
serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims. It highlights the need for constant vigilance and the importance of protecting ourselves from potential harm, even in seemingly secure environments. By reflecting on this Hadith and seeking guidance from the Quran, we can strive to maintain our spiritual well-being and protect ourselves from any attacks that may come our way. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to navigate through the challenges of life and remain steadfast in our faith.
