(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights six qualities that test the intellects of people. Let us delve into the meanings of these qualities and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

The first quality mentioned is (الحِلْمُ عِنْدَ الغَضَبِ) "forbearance when angry". This refers to the ability to control one's anger and remain calm in difficult situations. The Quran emphasizes the importance of this quality in Surah Al-Imran, verse 134: (3:134)

Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse encourages Muslims to exercise patience and self-restraint, even when faced with provocation or anger.

The second quality mentioned is (الصَّبْرُ عِنْدَ الرَّهْبِ) "patience when frightened". This refers to the ability to remain steadfast and composed in times of fear or danger. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience in various situations. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, Allah says, (2:155)

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse reminds Muslims to remain patient and steadfast during times of fear, knowing that Allah is with those who endure with patience.

The third quality mentioned is (القَصْدُ عِنْدَ الرَّغْبِ)

carefulness in obeying Allah in every situation

This refers to the importance of being mindful and conscientious in fulfilling our obligations to Allah at all times. The Quran emphasizes the significance of this quality in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197: (2:197)

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (consciousness of Allah). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse reminds Muslims to prioritize their relationship with Allah and to be mindful of their actions, seeking His pleasure in every situation.

The fourth quality mentioned is (حُسْنُ المُداراةِ)

friendliness in dealing with others

This refers to the importance of maintaining good relations and treating others with kindness and respect. The Quran emphasizes the significance of this quality in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 10: (49:10)

Indeed, the believers are brothers. So make peace between your brothers and fear Allah that you may receive mercy.

This verse highlights the importance of fostering a sense of brotherhood and unity among Muslims, promoting peaceful and harmonious relationships.

The fifth quality mentioned is (قِلَّةُ المُماراةِ)

reduced arguing and quarrelling

This refers to the importance of avoiding unnecessary disputes and conflicts. The Quran encourages Muslims to resolve their differences peacefully and to engage in constructive dialogue. In Surah Al-Anfal, verse 46, Allah says, (8:46)

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds Muslims to prioritize unity and cooperation, rather than engaging in fruitless arguments that only lead to division.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) provides valuable guidance for Muslims in testing their intellects. By practicing forbearance, patience, carefulness in obeying Allah, friendliness in dealing with others, and reducing arguing and quarrelling, we can strengthen our character and enhance our relationships with Allah and fellow believers. May Allah grant us the wisdom and understanding to embody these qualities in our lives.
