مَنْ سَألَ فَوْقَ قَدْرِهِ اِسْتَحَقَّ الحِرْمانَ۔
One who asks for that which is above his rank deserves to be deprived.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Begging And Asking People)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who asks for that which is above his rank deserves to be deprived.
This amazing Hadith emphasizes the importance of recognizing and accepting our limitations and not seeking beyond what is appropriate for us. To fully understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (sa'ala) "سَألَ" in Arabic means to ask or request. It signifies the act of seeking something from someone. In this context, it refers to asking for something that is beyond one's capacity or rightful position. The term (fawqa) "فَوْقَ" means above or beyond, indicating that the request is for something that exceeds one's rightful share or entitlement. Finally, (qadrihi) "قَدْرِهِ" refers to one's rank, position, or capacity.
To comprehend the wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of moderation, contentment, and recognizing one's limits. In Surah Al-A'raf, Allah says, (7:31)
Eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess
This verse highlights the significance of moderation in all aspects of life, including our desires and aspirations.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us to be content with what Allah has decreed for us. In Surah At-Talaq, Allah states, (65:3)
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him
This verse reminds us that our ultimate reliance should be on Allah, and we should trust in His wisdom and provision for us. Seeking beyond our rightful share indicates a lack of contentment and trust in Allah's decree.
Additionally, the Quran emphasizes the importance of recognizing and accepting our limitations. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah says, (17:37)
And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height
This verse reminds us of our finite capabilities and the need to remain humble and grounded.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their aspirations and desires. It cautions against seeking that which is beyond our rightful share or capacity. By doing so, we risk depriving ourselves of the blessings and contentment that come from being content with Allah's decree.
When we ask for more than what we deserve or are capable of handling, we may find ourselves overwhelmed, dissatisfied, and even deprived of the blessings that were meant for us. It is essential to recognize our limitations and be content with what Allah has ordained for us, for true success lies in aligning our desires with our rightful position.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed immense knowledge and wisdom, and his words carry great weight. Through this Hadith, he imparts a valuable lesson for all Muslims, regardless of their sect. It serves as a reminder to remain humble, content, and mindful of our limitations. By doing so, we can find peace and fulfillment in our lives, and we can avoid the pitfalls of seeking beyond our rightful share.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize our limitations, the contentment to be satisfied with His decree, and the humility to seek within our rightful ranks. May we strive to align our desires with our capacities and find true success in this world and the Hereafter.
