خَيْرُ الغَناءِ غَناءُ النَّفْسِ۔
The best affluence is the affluence of the soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The best affluence is the affluence of the soul.
Let us delve into the meaning of this amazing Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (ghana) "غَناء" in Arabic refers to affluence, wealth, or abundance. It signifies a state of being rich or prosperous. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that the truest and most valuable form of affluence is the affluence of the soul, which refers to the spiritual richness and contentment that one attains through righteousness, piety, and a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This concept of spiritual affluence is beautifully echoed in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking strength and sustenance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in order to attain a strong and prosperous soul.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children. It is as the likeness of vegetation after rain, thereof the growth is pleasing to the tiller; afterwards it dries up and you see it turning yellow; then it becomes straw.
This verse reminds us that material wealth and worldly possessions are temporary and fleeting. True affluence lies in the enrichment of the soul, which is everlasting and transcends the boundaries of this worldly life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize the development and nourishment of their souls. It encourages us to focus on cultivating qualities such as faith, humility, gratitude, patience, and compassion. By doing so, we attain a state of inner peace and contentment that surpasses any material possessions or worldly achievements.
When we prioritize the affluence of the soul, we become more aware of our actions and intentions. We strive to align ourselves with the teachings of Islam and seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This leads to a virtuous cycle of self-improvement, as our spiritual growth motivates us to engage in acts of worship, seek knowledge, and serve humanity.
The consequences of neglecting the affluence of the soul are evident in the world around us. Many individuals chase after material wealth, fame, and power, only to find themselves empty and unfulfilled. They may possess immense riches, but their souls remain impoverished and restless. In contrast, those who prioritize the affluence of the soul find solace, tranquility, and purpose in their lives, regardless of their material circumstances.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded to evaluate our priorities and strive for spiritual growth. We should seek knowledge, engage in acts of worship, and develop a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can attain the truest form of affluence - the affluence of the soul - and experience a profound sense of fulfillment and contentment in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the affluence of the soul. Ameen.
