اَلعَدْلُ أغْنَى الغَناءِ۔
Justice is the greatest of riches.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العدل أغنى الغناء" which translates to
Justice is the greatest of riches.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of justice in Islam.
The word (al-'adl) "العدل" refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It encompasses the idea of treating others with equality, giving everyone their due rights, and upholding moral and ethical principles. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, as it ensures harmony, balance, and the well-being of society.
To understand the importance of justice in Islam, we can turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of justice. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.
This verse highlights the obligation of Muslims to establish justice and resolve conflicts in a fair and equitable manner. It emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even in times of conflict and strife. By doing so, we not only fulfill the command of Allah but also demonstrate our love for Him.
Furthermore, justice is not only a duty towards others but also a means of attaining spiritual growth and closeness to Allah. In Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah says,
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.
This verse emphasizes the importance of justice even when it may go against our personal interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah's command to uphold justice takes precedence over any personal biases or attachments. By adhering to justice, we demonstrate our sincerity and devotion to Allah.
Imam Ali's statement,
Justice is the greatest of riches,
serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize justice in all aspects of their lives. It highlights that true wealth lies not in material possessions or worldly gains, but in the establishment of justice and the adherence to moral values.
When justice prevails in society, it leads to peace, harmony, and prosperity. It ensures that the rights of individuals are protected, and that everyone is treated fairly and equitably. Conversely, the absence of justice breeds oppression, inequality, and discord.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, understood the profound impact of justice on society. He exemplified justice in his own life, ensuring that even his enemies were treated fairly and justly. His commitment to justice earned him the respect and admiration of Muslims across generations.
As Muslims, we are called to emulate the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive for justice in all aspects of our lives. We must be just in our dealings with others, whether it is in our personal relationships, business transactions, or societal interactions. By doing so, we not only fulfill our religious obligations but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense value and significance of justice in Islam. It serves as a call for Muslims to prioritize justice in all aspects of their lives and to strive for its establishment in society. By upholding justice, we not only fulfill the command of Allah but also contribute to the well-being and prosperity of our communities. May Allah guide us all to be just and grant us the wisdom to understand the true richness that lies in justice.
