أفْضَلُ الطّاعاتِ الزُّهْدُ فِي الدُّنيا۔

The best [act of] obedience is renunciation of worldly pleasures.

The word "zuhd" in Arabic, which translates to
renunciation of worldly pleasures,
refers to abstaining from excessive attachment to material possessions and desires. It entails detachment from the transient and fleeting nature of this world and focusing on the eternal and everlasting rewards of the Hereafter. Zuhd is not about complete abandonment of worldly responsibilities, but rather about maintaining a balanced perspective and not allowing worldly pursuits to distract us from our ultimate purpose.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of zuhd and detachment from worldly desires. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly pursuits and the need to prioritize the eternal life to come.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

Thirdly, zuhd strengthens our resilience in the face of trials and tribulations. When we are not overly attached to worldly comforts, we are better equipped to face challenges with patience and trust in Allah's plan. Our focus shifts from temporary setbacks to the eternal rewards promised by Allah for those who persevere.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's statement on the superiority of zuhd as the best act of obedience aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Zuhd allows us to detach ourselves from the transient nature of this world and prioritize our ultimate purpose of seeking Allah's pleasure.
