(Ghurar al-Hikam: Understanding)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "مَنْ تَفَهَّمَ اِزْدادَ۔" This can be translated as,
One who tries to understand increases [his understanding].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (tafahhama) "تَفَهَّمَ" in the Hadith refers to the act of seeking knowledge and understanding. It signifies the active pursuit of knowledge and the effort made to comprehend and grasp its meaning. This word emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and highlights the fact that knowledge is not acquired passively, but through active engagement and effort.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of seeking knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. It emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding in order to elevate oneself intellectually and spiritually.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights that those who possess knowledge are elevated in the sight of Allah and are granted a higher rank. It reinforces the idea that seeking knowledge and understanding leads to spiritual growth and advancement.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement in the Hadith emphasizes the continuous nature of knowledge acquisition. It implies that the more one seeks knowledge and strives to understand, the more their understanding will increase. This highlights the importance of lifelong learning and the constant pursuit of knowledge.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah says,
He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been granted wisdom has certainly been given much good.
This verse emphasizes that wisdom and understanding are blessings from Allah, and He bestows them upon those whom He chooses. It further emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding in order to attain wisdom.
The consequences of seeking knowledge and understanding are manifold. Firstly, it leads to personal growth and development. By actively engaging in the pursuit of knowledge, individuals expand their intellectual horizons and broaden their understanding of the world around them. This enables them to make informed decisions and navigate through life with wisdom and clarity.
Secondly, seeking knowledge and understanding strengthens one's relationship with Allah. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:29), Allah says,
O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you.
By seeking knowledge and understanding, individuals deepen their understanding of Allah's commandments and gain a clearer perspective on how to please Him. This leads to increased taqwa (God-consciousness) and a closer connection with the Divine.
Moreover, seeking knowledge and understanding enables individuals to contribute positively to society. By acquiring knowledge and understanding, individuals become equipped with the tools to address societal challenges and make meaningful contributions to their communities. They become agents of positive change, spreading knowledge and wisdom to benefit others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding. It highlights that knowledge is not acquired passively, but through active effort and engagement. By continuously seeking knowledge, individuals can increase their understanding and wisdom.
