Hadith #7121

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The intellect of a man is indicated by his good speech and the purity of his roots is evinced by his beautiful actions.

This thought-provoking saying highlights the importance of both speech and actions in reflecting the true character and intellect of an individual.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (intellect) "عَقْلِ" refers to the ability to reason, understand, and make sound judgments. It encompasses the intellectual capacity of an individual to comprehend and analyze situations. (speech) "مَقالِهِ" refers to the words and expressions that one uses to communicate with others. And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of righteous actions and the guidance of truth. It reminds us that true success lies in combining belief with righteous deeds. The purity of one's roots is manifested through their beautiful actions, which include acts of worship, kindness, charity, and upholding justice.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the inseparable connection between intellect, speech, and actions. It encourages us to reflect upon the quality of our speech and the sincerity of our actions. Our words should be a reflection of our intellect, guided by wisdom, kindness, and respect.
