(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ عَدَلَ نَفَذَ حُكْمُهُ۔

which translates to,

The ruling of one who is just gets acted upon.

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of justice and its consequences in the society.

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (adala) "عَدَلَ" refers to being just, fair, and equitable in one's actions and decisions. It encompasses the idea of treating others with fairness and impartiality. The word (nafadha) "نَفَذَ" means to be implemented, executed, or carried out. And finally, (hukmuhu) "حُكْمُهُ" refers to one's ruling or judgment.

To further comprehend the significance of justice in Islam, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:8),

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of justice and impartiality in all aspects of life. Muslims are urged to be witnesses in justice, meaning they should stand up for justice and fairness in their dealings with others. It also emphasizes the need to overcome personal biases and prejudices when making judgments or decisions.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah An-Nisa (4:58), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice. Excellent is that which Allah instructs you. Indeed, Allah is ever Hearing and Seeing.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling trusts and judging with justice. It reminds Muslims that they have a responsibility to uphold justice and fairness when resolving disputes or making decisions that affect others. By doing so, they are following the command of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and fulfilling their duty as believers.

Now, let us reflect on the meaning of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. The ruling of a just person holds great weight and influence in society. When a just ruler or judge makes a decision, it is not only legally binding but also morally and ethically sound. Such a ruling is based on fairness, equality, and the principles of Islam.

When justice is upheld and implemented, it leads to a harmonious and balanced society. People feel secure and protected, knowing that their rights will be respected and their grievances will be addressed. On the other hand, when injustice prevails, it breeds resentment, division, and unrest.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on justice serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of upholding justice in all aspects of their lives. It applies not only to those in positions of authority but to every individual. We must strive to be just in our interactions with others, whether it be in our personal relationships, business dealings, or societal responsibilities.

By embodying justice in our actions and decisions, we contribute to the establishment of a just society, as envisioned by Islam. We become agents of positive change, promoting peace, harmony, and equality. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be just and fair, and may He grant us the ability to act upon the rulings of the just.
