(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

عَلَيْكَ بِإدْمانِ العَمَلِ فِي النِّشاطِ والكَسَلِ۔

This can be translated as:

You must persevere in your actions in times of activeness and laziness.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran.

The word (idman) "إدْمانِ" in the Hadith means perseverance or consistency. It implies the need to maintain steadfastness and dedication in performing our actions, regardless of the circumstances. This includes times of activeness, when we are motivated and energized, as well as times of laziness, when we may feel demotivated or lethargic.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of perseverance and consistency in various aspects of our lives. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:45), Allah says,

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].

This verse highlights the need for perseverance in seeking help from Allah, even when faced with difficulties.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah says,

O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.

This verse encourages believers to persevere, endure, and remain steadfast in their faith and actions, regardless of the challenges they may face.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that our commitment to performing good deeds should not waver based on our mood or circumstances. Whether we are feeling active and enthusiastic or experiencing laziness and lethargy, we must continue to engage in righteous actions.

In times of activeness, when we are motivated and energized, it is easier to perform acts of worship and engage in good deeds. However, it is during times of laziness and lethargy that our true commitment and sincerity are tested. It is in these moments that we must push ourselves to persevere and maintain consistency in our actions.

For example, let's consider the act of prayer. During times of activeness, when we are spiritually uplifted, it is easier to establish a regular prayer routine and perform our prayers with focus and devotion. However, during times of laziness, when we may feel unmotivated or distracted, it becomes more challenging to maintain our prayer habits.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages us to overcome this laziness and continue to perform our prayers, even when we may not feel like it. By persevering in our prayers during times of laziness, we strengthen our spiritual connection with Allah and reinforce our commitment to worship.

Furthermore, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us the importance of consistency in all aspects of our lives. Whether it is in our relationships, work, studies, or personal development, consistency is key to achieving success and growth.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the significance of consistency in various contexts. For example, in Surah Al-Ma'arij (70:5-7), Allah says,

So be patient, with a gracious patience. Indeed, they see it [as] distant, but We see it [as] near. On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion.

This verse highlights the importance of patience and consistency in our pursuit of Paradise. It reminds us that even though the reward may seem distant, we must remain steadfast and persevere in our actions, knowing that Allah sees our efforts and will reward us accordingly.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to persevere in their actions, both during times of activeness and laziness. It urges us to maintain consistency and dedication in performing good deeds, regardless of our mood or circumstances. By doing so, we strengthen our faith, develop resilience, and achieve success in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the ability to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and persevere in our actions at all times.
