Verily supporting [one’s] companions financially is a sign of noble descent.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Financial Support)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Verily supporting [one’s] companions financially is a sign of noble descent.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of providing financial support to one's companions and highlights its significance as a noble characteristic.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The term (muwasat) "مُواساة" refers to supporting or assisting someone, particularly in financial matters. It encompasses the act of providing financial aid, assistance, or sustenance to those in need. The word (rifq) "رِّفَاق" refers to companions or associates, those who share a close bond or relationship.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hashr (59:9):
And [also for] those who were settled in the Home [i.e., the Prophet's city, Medina] and [adopted] the faith before them. They love those who emigrated to them and find not any want in their breasts of what the emigrants were given but give [them] preference over themselves, even though they are in privation.
This verse highlights the noble character of the Ansar (the residents of Medina) who supported and provided for the Muhajirun (the emigrants from Mecca) when they arrived in Medina. Despite their own limited resources, the Ansar selflessly prioritized the needs of their companions over their own. This exemplifies the essence of the Hadith, emphasizing the importance of financial support and generosity towards one's companions.
Another verse that sheds light on this concept is found in Surah Al-Isra (17:80):
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the supplication of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), who sought sustenance and support from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It teaches us that seeking financial assistance from Allah and providing support to others are interconnected acts of righteousness.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to support their companions financially. This act of generosity not only demonstrates noble descent but also fosters unity, compassion, and brotherhood within the Muslim community. When we provide financial aid to our companions, we strengthen the bonds of friendship and create an environment of mutual support and care.
Moreover, this Hadith encourages us to reflect on the consequences of our actions. By supporting our companions financially, we contribute to their well-being and alleviate their burdens. This act of kindness can have a profound impact on their lives, enabling them to overcome challenges and achieve success. Additionally, it fosters a sense of gratitude and appreciation within the hearts of those who receive support, leading to a cycle of generosity and compassion.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was renowned for his knowledge, wisdom, and generosity. His teachings and actions serve as a guiding light for Muslims. By following his example and implementing the teachings of this Hadith, we can cultivate a society that is characterized by empathy, support, and selflessness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of providing financial support to our companions. It highlights the noble nature of this act and encourages Muslims to prioritize the needs of others over their own. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that support this concept, we can gain a deeper understanding of the significance of financial assistance and its positive impact on individuals and society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the teachings of this Hadith and become a source of support and compassion for our companions.
