مَنْ جَزَعَ عَظُمَتْ مُصيبَتُهُ۔
Whoever becomes anxious, his adversity increases.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anxiety)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ جَزَعَ عَظُمَتْ مُصيبَتُهُ۔
This can be translated as,
Whoever becomes anxious, his adversity increases.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (jaza'a) "جَزَعَ" in this Hadith refers to a state of anxiety, unease, or distress. It is a feeling of worry or fear that arises when faced with a difficult situation or adversity. This anxiety can consume a person's thoughts and emotions, leading to further distress and hardship.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah is aware of our capabilities and does not place a burden on us that we cannot handle. Therefore, when we become anxious and overwhelmed by our adversities, we are essentially doubting Allah's wisdom and mercy.
Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Inshirah, verses 5-6: (94:5-6)
Verily, with hardship, there is relief. Verily, with hardship, there is relief.
These verses assure us that after every difficulty, there is ease. They remind us that our trials and tribulations are temporary, and Allah will provide us with relief and comfort. However, when we allow anxiety to consume us, we lose sight of this divine promise and fail to recognize the opportunities for growth and blessings that lie within our challenges.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, highlights the detrimental consequences of anxiety in this Hadith. When we become anxious, our focus shifts from seeking solutions and relying on Allah's guidance to dwelling on our worries and fears. This mindset hinders our ability to think clearly and make rational decisions. It also weakens our trust in Allah's plan and His ability to alleviate our hardships.
Moreover, anxiety can have a negative impact on our physical and mental well-being. It can lead to sleep disturbances, loss of appetite, and increased stress levels. These effects further exacerbate our adversity and prevent us from effectively coping with the challenges we face.
Therefore, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in the face of adversity and to trust in Allah's wisdom and mercy. Instead of succumbing to anxiety, we should turn to Allah in prayer, seeking His guidance and strength. We should strive to maintain a positive mindset, knowing that every difficulty is an opportunity for growth and a means of drawing closer to Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the detrimental consequences of anxiety in times of adversity. It reminds us to trust in Allah's plan and to seek His guidance and support. By doing so, we can overcome our challenges with resilience and faith, knowing that Allah is always with us. May Allah grant us the strength to face our adversities with patience and trust in His divine wisdom.
