(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Ignorant And The Foolish)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

غُرُورُ الجاهِلِ بِمُجالاتِ الباطِلِ۔

This can be translated as:

The ignorant one is deceived by futile absurdities.

Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (ghuroor) "غُرُورُ" refers to deception or delusion. It is a state of being fooled or misled. (al-jahil) "الجاهِلِ" refers to the ignorant one, someone lacking knowledge or understanding. (mujalat) "مُجالاتِ" refers to futile or baseless things. And (al-batil) "الباطِلِ" refers to falsehood or absurdities.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the dangers of ignorance and being deceived by falsehood in several verses.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah says:

O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.

This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and verifying information before accepting it. Ignorance can lead to harm and regretful actions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am (6:116), Allah says:

And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying.

This verse highlights the danger of blindly following the majority without proper knowledge and understanding. Ignorance can lead to deviation from the path of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that ignorance can make us susceptible to being deceived by futile absurdities. When we lack knowledge and understanding, we become vulnerable to falsehood and baseless ideas. We may be easily swayed by empty rhetoric, false promises, and misleading ideologies.

For example, in today's world, we see many people falling into the trap of extremist ideologies, conspiracy theories, and false narratives. These individuals are often lacking in knowledge and critical thinking skills, making them susceptible to manipulation and deception. They become engrossed in futile absurdities that lead them away from the truth and the teachings of Islam.

The consequences of being deceived by futile absurdities are grave. It can lead to division, conflict, and the spread of misinformation. It can hinder our personal growth and prevent us from attaining true understanding and enlightenment. It can also distance us from Allah and His guidance, as we become engrossed in falsehood instead of seeking the truth.

Therefore, it is essential for Muslims to seek knowledge, to educate themselves, and to critically analyze information. We must strive to understand the teachings of Islam and the wisdom behind them. By doing so, we can protect ourselves from being deceived by futile absurdities and navigate through the complexities of the modern world with wisdom and discernment.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He was a beacon of guidance for the Muslim ummah, and his teachings continue to inspire and enlighten us today. Let us follow in his footsteps by seeking knowledge, questioning falsehood, and striving for a deeper understanding of our faith. May Allah protect us from the deception of ignorance and guide us on the straight path.
