اَلْغَنِيُّ مَنِ اسْتَغْنى بِالقَناعَةِ۔
A rich person is he who becomes rich through contentment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Affluence And The Rich)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الغني من استغنى بالقناعة
which translates to
A rich person is he who becomes rich through contentment.
This Hadith emphasizes the concept of true wealth and richness, which is not solely measured by material possessions, but rather by the state of contentment and satisfaction with what one possesses.
The word (al-ghani) "الغني" refers to someone who is rich or wealthy. However, in this context, it goes beyond the mere accumulation of worldly wealth. It encompasses a deeper understanding of richness, one that is not confined to material possessions but rather includes spiritual and emotional contentment.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of (al-qana'ah) "القناعة", which translates to contentment. Contentment is the state of being satisfied and grateful with what one has, regardless of the quantity or quality of possessions. It is the opposite of greed and the constant pursuit of more.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of contentment and warns against the dangers of greed and materialism.
In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:60)
And [recall] when Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, 'Strike with your staff the stone.' And there gushed forth from it twelve springs, and every people knew its watering place. 'Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.'
This verse reminds us of the story of Prophet Moses (Musa) and the Israelites in the desert. Despite their dire circumstances, Allah provided them with sustenance in the form of water from a stone. The lesson here is that Allah's provision is sufficient, and we should be content with what He has bestowed upon us.
In another verse, Allah says, (Quran 14:7)
And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'
This verse emphasizes the importance of gratitude and contentment. When we are grateful for what we have, Allah promises to increase us in favor. This increase can be in various forms, including spiritual blessings, peace of mind, and even material provisions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true richness lies in contentment. When we are content with what we have, we are not constantly chasing after more wealth, possessions, or status. This contentment brings inner peace and satisfaction, freeing us from the constant cycle of desire and acquisition.
Contentment also protects us from the negative consequences of greed and materialism. Greed leads to dissatisfaction, envy, and a never-ending pursuit of more. It can also lead to injustice, as people become willing to exploit others to fulfill their desires. Contentment, on the other hand, promotes fairness, gratitude, and a sense of sufficiency.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. His understanding of true richness and contentment was not merely theoretical but was reflected in his own life. Despite being the caliph and having access to wealth and power, he lived a simple and humble life, always prioritizing the well-being of others.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true richness is not measured by material possessions but by contentment. When we are content with what Allah has provided us, we experience true wealth and inner peace. This contentment protects us from the negative consequences of greed and materialism, allowing us to live a balanced and fulfilling life. May Allah grant us the wisdom to embrace contentment and find true richness in our lives.
