(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sense Of Honour And Possessiveness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "غَيْرَةُ الرَّجُلِ إيمانٌ۔" This can be translated as,
A man's sense of honour is faith.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (ghayrah) "غَيْرَةُ" refers to a person's sense of honor, dignity, and protectiveness. It is the feeling of safeguarding one's self-respect and the respect of others. This sense of honor is an essential aspect of a person's character and is deeply rooted in their faith. It is a reflection of their commitment to upholding moral values and righteousness.
The word (iman) "إيمانٌ" translates to faith. Faith is not merely a belief in the heart, but it encompasses all aspects of a person's life. It is a comprehensive system that guides their thoughts, actions, and interactions with others. Faith is the foundation upon which a person's character is built, and it is through faith that they strive to attain the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The Quran emphasizes the importance of maintaining a sense of honor and dignity. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse highlights the importance of treating others with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or social status. It reminds us that our sense of honor should be rooted in our faith, and we should refrain from belittling or insulting others. By doing so, we uphold the principles of Islam and demonstrate our commitment to righteousness.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us to protect the honor and dignity of others. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of avoiding baseless assumptions and gossip. It reminds us that our sense of honor should extend to protecting the reputation and dignity of others. Backbiting and spreading rumors not only harm the individual being talked about but also tarnish our own character and faith. By refraining from such actions, we demonstrate our commitment to maintaining a sense of honor and faith.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the inseparable connection between a person's sense of honor and their faith. When a person possesses a strong sense of honor, it reflects their deep-rooted faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This sense of honor motivates them to uphold moral values, treat others with respect, and protect the dignity of themselves and others.
When a person's sense of honor is rooted in faith, it has profound consequences. It leads to a life of righteousness, where one strives to please Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of their life. It motivates them to be honest, just, and compassionate. It guides their interactions with others, ensuring that they are fair, respectful, and considerate.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of cultivating a strong sense of honor and dignity. It is through this sense of honor that we demonstrate our faith and commitment to the teachings of Islam. By upholding our sense of honor, we contribute to a society that is built on justice, compassion, and respect for one another.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to maintain a strong sense of honor rooted in our faith. May He guide us to live lives that reflect the teachings of Islam and may He grant us the strength to protect the honor and dignity of ourselves and others.
