Hadith #9993

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ تَذَكَّرَ بُعْدَ السَّفَرِ اِسْتَعَدَّ۔

This can be translated as,

One who recalls the distance of his journey, prepares [for it].

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (tadhakkar) "تَذَكَّرَ" means to remember or recall, while (bu'da) "بُعْدَ" refers to distance, and (as-safar) "السَّفَرِ" means journey. The word (ista'adda) "اِسْتَعَدَّ" means to prepare or make ready.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of preparation and foresight. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197, Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

This verse highlights the need for physical provisions during a journey, but also emphasizes that the best provision one can have is piety and consciousness of Allah. This aligns with the wisdom shared by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Hadith.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 18, Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse reminds us to be mindful of our actions and to prepare for the future. It encourages us to reflect on our deeds and ensure that we are making the necessary preparations for our journey in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims. This preparation encompasses various aspects. Firstly, we must prepare ourselves spiritually by increasing our knowledge of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and he encourages us to follow in his footsteps. By seeking knowledge and understanding, we equip ourselves with the tools to navigate the challenges and trials of life.

Secondly, we must prepare ourselves morally and ethically. This involves adhering to the principles of Islam, practicing good manners, and being mindful of our actions. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of righteousness and good conduct. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197, Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).

This highlights that true preparation lies in cultivating piety and righteousness within ourselves.

Thirdly, we must prepare ourselves by performing good deeds and seeking forgiveness for our sins. The Quran teaches us that our actions in this world will have consequences in the Hereafter. In Surah Al-Taghabun, verse 16, Allah says,

So fear Allah as much as you are able and listen and obey and spend [in the way of Allah]; it is better for your selves. And whoever is protected from the stinginess of his soul - it is those who will be the successful.

This verse reminds us to fear Allah, obey His commands, and engage in acts of charity and kindness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for all Muslims to prepare themselves for the journey of life and the Hereafter. By recalling the distance of our journey, we are motivated to seek knowledge, cultivate piety, and perform good deeds.
