إذا رَأيْتَ في غَيْرِكَ خُلْقاً ذَميماً فَتَجَنَبْ مِنْ نَفْسِكَ أمثالَهُ۔
When you see in others a quality which is objectionable, then keep similar qualities away from yourself.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to refrain from adopting objectionable qualities that we observe in others. The word (dhamiman) "ذَمِيمًا" in this Hadith refers to a quality or characteristic that is morally reprehensible or blameworthy. It is a reminder for us to be cautious and mindful of our own behavior and to distance ourselves from negative traits.
This guidance from Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) aligns with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
This verse teaches us to refrain from mocking or belittling others, as they may possess qualities that are superior to our own. It also warns against insulting or using offensive language towards one another. By avoiding such behavior, we can maintain a harmonious and respectful society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 12, Allah says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding negative assumptions about others. It reminds us that making baseless assumptions is sinful and can lead to harmful consequences. Additionally, it prohibits backbiting and spying on one another, comparing it to the repugnant act of consuming the flesh of a deceased person. This serves as a powerful metaphor to emphasize the severity of such behavior.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to reflect on our own actions and to refrain from adopting objectionable qualities that we may observe in others. By doing so, we can strive for self-improvement and contribute to a more virtuous and compassionate society. It reminds us that we should not be quick to judge or criticize others, but rather focus on our own character development.
For example, if we see someone displaying arrogance, instead of criticizing them, we should reflect on our own behavior and ensure that we do not fall into the same trap. If we witness someone spreading gossip or engaging in backbiting, we should remind ourselves to refrain from such harmful actions and instead promote unity and harmony.
By adhering to the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran, we can cultivate a society that is characterized by humility, empathy, and self-improvement. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these qualities and distance ourselves from objectionable traits.
