How good a companion of faith knowledge is!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
نِعْمَ قَرينُ الإيمانِ الْعِلْمُ۔
This can be translated as,
How good a companion of faith knowledge is!
In this beautiful saying, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance and virtue of knowledge in the path of faith.
Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this Hadith by examining the key words and their implications. The word (qareen) "قَرينُ" refers to a companion or a close associate. It implies a deep connection and partnership. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the intimate relationship between faith and knowledge. Just as a companion accompanies and supports us in our journey, knowledge serves as a constant companion in our pursuit of faith.
The word (iman) "إيمانِ" refers to faith, which is the foundation of a Muslim's belief system. It encompasses the belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), His Prophets, the Day of Judgment, and other essential tenets of Islam. Faith is not merely a passive acceptance but a living, dynamic force that shapes our actions and attitudes.
Now, let us turn to the word (ilm) "عِلْمُ", which means knowledge. Knowledge is the acquisition of information, understanding, and wisdom. It encompasses religious knowledge, worldly knowledge, and the knowledge of self. In the context of this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) specifically refers to the knowledge that enhances and strengthens one's faith.
To further elucidate the significance of knowledge in the realm of faith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse emphasizes the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. Those who possess knowledge are elevated in their understanding and practice of faith.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees.
This verse highlights the honor and elevation bestowed upon those who possess faith and knowledge. It signifies that knowledge is a means of spiritual ascension and growth.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) understood the profound connection between faith and knowledge. He recognized that knowledge is not only a tool for personal development but also a means to strengthen one's faith. When knowledge accompanies faith, it becomes a guiding light that illuminates the path of righteousness and leads to a deeper understanding of Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commandments.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on the importance of knowledge in the context of faith has profound implications for Muslims. It motivates us to seek knowledge and continuously strive for intellectual growth. By acquiring knowledge, we gain a deeper understanding of our faith, enabling us to practice it more effectively and make informed decisions in our lives.
Moreover, the companionship of knowledge with faith has far-reaching consequences. It empowers individuals to combat ignorance, superstitions, and misconceptions that may hinder the progress of faith. Knowledge equips Muslims with the tools to address contemporary challenges and engage in meaningful dialogue with people of different beliefs.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense value of knowledge in our spiritual journey. It encourages us to seek knowledge, not only for personal gain but also for the sake of strengthening our faith. By doing so, we can become true companions of faith, guided by the light of knowledge, and contribute positively to our communities and the world at large.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and motivation to seek knowledge and strengthen our faith. May He bless us with the ability to apply the knowledge we acquire in a manner that pleases Him and benefits humanity. Ameen.
