(Ghurar al-Hikam: Displeasure)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ كَثُرَ سَخَطُهُ لَمْ يُعْرَفْ رِضاهُ۔

This Hadith highlights the relationship between one's displeasure and their ability to experience true pleasure. Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.

The word (sakhathuhu) "سَخَطُهُ" refers to one's displeasure, anger, or frustration. It signifies a state of being upset or dissatisfied with a particular situation or individual. This can manifest in various ways, such as through verbal expressions, physical reactions, or emotional turmoil.

On the other hand, the word (ridaahu) "رِضاهُ" denotes one's pleasure, contentment, or satisfaction. It represents a state of inner tranquility and fulfillment, where one is at peace with themselves and their surroundings.

To comprehend the essence of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice and fairness. It teaches us that harboring excessive displeasure and anger can hinder our ability to find a resolution and establish peace. When we allow our anger to consume us, we become blinded to the potential for reconciliation and compromise.

Furthermore, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Rum (30:21),

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

This verse highlights the importance of cultivating love, affection, and mercy in our relationships. When we let our displeasure overshadow our ability to experience pleasure, we jeopardize the harmony and tranquility that Allah has intended for us. By nurturing positive emotions and seeking mutual understanding, we can find true pleasure in our interactions with others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for us to reflect upon our own emotions and reactions. If we allow our displeasure to dominate our lives, we will be unable to fully appreciate the moments of joy and contentment that come our way. It is crucial for us, as Muslims, to strive for balance and moderation in our emotions, so that we may experience the true pleasure that Allah has bestowed upon us.

Let us take a moment to contemplate the consequences of excessive displeasure. When we constantly dwell in a state of anger or frustration, it not only affects our own well-being but also has a negative impact on our relationships with others. Our loved ones may become distant, our friendships may suffer, and our overall quality of life may diminish. Conversely, by cultivating a sense of inner peace and contentment, we can foster healthier connections and enhance our overall happiness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the profound connection between our displeasure and our ability to experience true pleasure. By seeking guidance from the Quran, we understand the importance of resolving conflicts with justice and cultivating love and mercy in our relationships. Let us strive to find a balance in our emotions, so that we may live a life filled with contentment, joy, and the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome our anger and find true pleasure in His blessings.
