(Ghurar al-Hikam: Inclination)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Kullu shay'in yameelu ila jinsihi.

This Hadith can be translated as

Everything inclines towards its [own] kind.

This enlightening saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds deep wisdom and can be understood in light of the teachings of the Quran.

The word "yameelu" in the Hadith means to incline or lean towards. It signifies a natural tendency or inclination that exists within all things. The word "jinsihi" refers to one's own kind or species. Thus, the Hadith teaches us that everything in the world has an innate inclination towards its own kind.

This concept can be found in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Rum, verse 30:

So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah. That is the correct religion, but most of the people do not know.

In this verse, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs us to incline towards the truth and adhere to the fitrah (natural disposition) that He has created in all people. This fitrah is the inherent inclination towards recognizing and submitting to the truth. It is a universal inclination that exists within every human being, regardless of their background or beliefs.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-An'am, verse 165, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

And it is He who has made you successors upon the earth and has raised some of you above others in degrees [of rank] that He may try you through what He has given you. Indeed, your Lord is swift in penalty; but indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful to the righteous.

This verse highlights the natural inclination towards hierarchy and differentiation among human beings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has raised some individuals above others in degrees of rank, testing them through the responsibilities and privileges bestowed upon them. This inclination towards differentiation is a part of the divine plan and serves as a means of trial and accountability for individuals.

Applying the teachings of the Quran to the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand that everything in the world, including human beings, has a natural inclination towards its own kind. This inclination manifests itself in various ways, such as the tendency of individuals to associate with those who share similar beliefs, values, and interests.

For example, people often form social groups or communities based on shared religious, cultural, or ideological backgrounds. This inclination towards one's own kind can be seen in the formation of families, tribes, and nations, where individuals naturally gravitate towards those who are similar to them in terms of language, customs, and traditions.

However, it is important to note that this inclination towards one's own kind should not lead to prejudice, discrimination, or the exclusion of others. Islam teaches us to recognize and respect the diversity of humanity, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of knowing and understanding one another, regardless of our differences. It reminds us that the true measure of nobility and superiority lies in righteousness and piety, not in superficial characteristics or affiliations.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that everything in the world inclines towards its own kind. This inclination is a natural tendency that exists within all things, including human beings. It is a reflection of the divine plan and serves as a means of trial and accountability for individuals. However, it is important to recognize and respect the diversity of humanity, and to strive for unity, understanding, and righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of truth and righteousness.
