عَلَيكَ بِالرِّفقِ، فَمَنْ رَفَقَ في أفعالِهِ تَمَّ أمْرُهُ۔
Adopt gentleness, for whoever is gentle in his actions, his matters will be [successfully] completed.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Leniency And Gentleness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of adopting gentleness in our actions. The word (rafq) "رَفَقَ" in Arabic refers to being gentle, kind, and considerate. It encompasses qualities such as tenderness, compassion, and leniency. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to incorporate this quality into our behavior and dealings with others.
To understand the significance of gentleness, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes Himself as (Ar-Ra'uf) "الرَّؤُوفُ", meaning the Most Kind and Gentle. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,
And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make peace between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make peace between them with justice and act in fairness. Indeed, Allah loves those who act in fairness.
This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts with gentleness and fairness. It encourages Muslims to strive for peace and reconciliation, even in the face of oppression. By adopting gentleness in our actions, we can help bring about harmony and unity within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:55), Allah says,
And when they hear ill speech, they turn away from it and say, 'For us are our deeds, and for you are your deeds. Peace will be upon you; we seek not the ignorant.'
This verse teaches us the importance of responding to negativity and ill speech with gentleness and restraint. Instead of engaging in arguments or responding in a harsh manner, we are advised to turn away and maintain our composure. By doing so, we uphold the values of patience and gentleness, which are highly regarded in Islam.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that adopting gentleness in our actions leads to the successful completion of our matters. When we approach our tasks and responsibilities with kindness and consideration, we create an environment of cooperation and positivity. This, in turn, enhances our chances of achieving success and favorable outcomes.
For example, imagine a leader who governs with gentleness and compassion. Such a leader would inspire loyalty and trust among their followers, leading to a harmonious and productive society. On the other hand, a leader who rules with harshness and cruelty would breed resentment and discord, ultimately leading to the downfall of their regime.
Similarly, in our personal lives, adopting gentleness in our interactions with family, friends, and colleagues can have a profound impact. When we treat others with kindness and respect, we build strong and meaningful relationships based on trust and understanding. This, in turn, paves the way for successful collaborations, effective communication, and overall personal growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of adopting gentleness in our actions. By being gentle in our dealings with others, we create an atmosphere of harmony and cooperation. This not only benefits our relationships but also increases the likelihood of achieving success in our endeavors. Let us strive to embody the qualities of gentleness and compassion, following the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the Hereafter.
