بِحُسْنِ الأفْعالِ يَحْسُنُ الثَّناءُ۔
Through virtuous deeds, praise becomes worthy.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
بِحُسْنِ الأفْعالِ يَحْسُنُ الثَّناءُ۔
This can be translated as,
Through virtuous deeds, praise becomes worthy.
This beautiful saying highlights the importance of performing good actions and how they lead to deserving commendation and admiration.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (husn) "حُسْنِ" refers to goodness, beauty, and excellence. It encompasses all positive qualities and actions that are pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (af'al) "أفْعالِ" means deeds or actions. It encompasses all types of actions, whether they are physical, verbal, or even internal thoughts and intentions. Finally, the word (thana) "ثَّناءُ" refers to praise, commendation, or admiration.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse emphasizes the importance of performing righteous deeds and cultivating piety as the best provision for our journey in this world and the hereafter. It is through these virtuous actions that we earn the praise and reward from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in all our actions. When we perform good deeds with sincerity and seek Allah's pleasure, our actions become praiseworthy and deserving of commendation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us that our actions define our character and reputation. When we consistently engage in virtuous deeds, we not only earn the praise and admiration of others but also strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our actions become a reflection of our inner state and our commitment to living a righteous life.
The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It serves as a reminder that our actions have a direct impact on how we are perceived by others and how we are rewarded by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). If we strive to perform good deeds consistently, our reputation will be one of righteousness and integrity. People will recognize our efforts and commend us for our virtuous behavior. Moreover, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) will reward us abundantly for our righteous actions, both in this world and in the hereafter.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to make our actions align with the teachings of Islam and the values of goodness and righteousness. We should aim to perform acts of kindness, charity, honesty, and justice in all aspects of our lives. By doing so, we not only improve our own character but also inspire others to follow the path of righteousness. Let us remember that through virtuous deeds, praise becomes worthy, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to be people of excellence and goodness.
