(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

حُسْنُ البِشْر أحَدُ البِشارَتَيْنِ۔

This can be translated as,

Cheerfulness is one of the two glad tidings.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (husn) "حُسْنُ" refers to cheerfulness, happiness, or a positive disposition. It signifies a state of contentment and joy that radiates from within. It is important to note that this cheerfulness is not superficial or temporary, but rather a deep-rooted sense of tranquility and satisfaction.

The term (al-bishr) "البِشْر" means glad tidings or good news. It refers to the announcement of something positive, uplifting, and promising. In this Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights that cheerfulness is one of the two glad tidings, implying that it is a source of immense blessings and rewards.

To understand the significance of cheerfulness, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yunus (10:58),

Say, 'In the bounty of Allah and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate.'

This verse emphasizes the importance of finding joy and happiness in the blessings and mercy of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It encourages Muslims to cultivate a positive mindset and appreciate the countless favors bestowed upon them.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nahl (16:97), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.

This verse highlights that righteousness and faith are intrinsically linked to a good and fulfilling life. It implies that a cheerful disposition, rooted in righteousness and faith, leads to a life of contentment and fulfillment.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of cheerfulness as one of the two glad tidings. By embracing a positive outlook, we not only experience personal happiness but also spread positivity to those around us. Our cheerful demeanor can uplift others, inspire hope, and create a harmonious atmosphere within our communities.

Moreover, cheerfulness can have profound effects on our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Numerous studies have shown that a positive mindset contributes to better overall health, increased resilience, and improved relationships. By embodying cheerfulness, we enhance our own quality of life and positively impact the lives of others.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on cheerfulness serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for a balanced and joyful approach to life. It encourages us to find happiness in the blessings of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), maintain a positive outlook, and spread joy to those around us. By embodying cheerfulness, we not only fulfill our own spiritual and emotional needs but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate cheerfulness in our lives and be a source of joy for others. May we always remember the profound wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and strive to embody his knowledge and virtues. Ameen.
