مَنْ وَثِقَ بِنَفْسِهِ خانَتْهُ۔
Whoever trusts his [carnal] soul is betrayed by it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Whoever trusts his [carnal] soul is betrayed by it.
This Hadith highlights the inherent weakness and deceitfulness of the human soul when it is left unchecked and uncontrolled. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (wathiq) "وَثِقَ" in this Hadith means to trust or rely upon something or someone. It implies a sense of confidence and dependence. The word (nafsihi) "نَفْسِهِ" refers to the carnal soul or the lower self, which is prone to desires and temptations. It is the part of our being that can lead us astray if not disciplined and guided by the divine teachings.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the nature of the human soul and the need for self-control. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy.
This verse emphasizes the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil and its constant struggle to fulfill its desires.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes, We are able [even] to proportion his fingertips.
This verse reminds us of the Day of Judgment when every action, even the smallest, will be accounted for. It serves as a reminder that we should not trust our souls blindly, as they can lead us astray and ultimately betray us.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against placing unwavering trust in our carnal souls. This trust can manifest in various ways, such as relying solely on our own desires and whims, neglecting the guidance of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), or succumbing to the temptations of this worldly life.
When we trust our carnal souls, we become vulnerable to its deceitful tactics. Our desires and passions can cloud our judgment, leading us away from the path of righteousness. We may prioritize our own selfish interests over the greater good, indulge in sinful behavior, and disregard the consequences of our actions.
For example, if a person trusts their carnal soul and becomes consumed by their desires for wealth and material possessions, they may resort to unethical means to acquire wealth, such as engaging in fraud or exploitation. This betrayal of trust not only harms others but also tarnishes their own character and spiritual well-being.
On the other hand, if we recognize the inherent weakness of our souls and strive to discipline and control them, we can avoid falling into the trap of betrayal. By seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), we can align our desires and actions with the divine will. This self-discipline allows us to make decisions based on moral principles and the pursuit of righteousness.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, which enabled him to understand the true nature of the human soul. He recognized the importance of self-control and the dangers of blindly trusting one's carnal desires. His teachings and actions serve as a beacon of guidance for Muslims, reminding us to be vigilant in taming our souls and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) above all else.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be cautious and vigilant in trusting their carnal souls. By recognizing the inherent weakness and deceitfulness of our desires, we can strive to discipline and control them, aligning our actions with the divine teachings. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome the betrayal of our souls and attain His pleasure.
