(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remembrance [Of Allah] And The Reminder)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
عَلَيْكَ بِذِكْرِ اللّهِ فَإنَّهُ نُورُ القَلْبِ۔
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of remembering Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as it is the light that illuminates the heart.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this hadith. (dhikr) "ذِكْرِ" refers to the remembrance of Allah, which encompasses various forms of worship such as recitation of the Quran, supplication, and praising Allah's attributes. (nur) "نُورُ" means light, symbolizing guidance, enlightenment, and spiritual illumination. And (al-qalb) "القَلْبِ" refers to the heart, which is not only the physical organ but also the seat of emotions, intellect, and spirituality.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the importance of remembering Allah and its profound impact on the heart. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ar-Ra'd (13:28),
Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.
This verse emphasizes that the remembrance of Allah brings tranquility and peace to the hearts of the believers. It serves as a source of comfort and solace in times of distress and uncertainty. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah, our hearts are filled with His light, dispelling the darkness of doubt and fear.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:45), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, when you encounter a company [from the enemy forces], stand firm and remember Allah much that you may be successful.
This verse highlights the connection between remembrance of Allah and success. When faced with challenges and adversities, the remembrance of Allah strengthens our resolve, grants us clarity of thought, and enables us to overcome difficulties. It is through the light of Allah's remembrance that we find the guidance and strength to navigate through the trials of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith reminds us that the remembrance of Allah is not merely a ritualistic act but a means to attain spiritual enlightenment and purification. When we engage in the remembrance of Allah with sincerity and mindfulness, our hearts become receptive to His guidance and our souls are nourished with His divine light.
The remembrance of Allah has transformative effects on our character and behavior. It instills in us a sense of humility, gratitude, and mindfulness. It serves as a constant reminder of our purpose in life and our accountability to Allah. By remembering Allah, we become more conscious of our actions and strive to align them with His commands.
Moreover, the remembrance of Allah strengthens our connection with Him and deepens our love for Him. It is through this remembrance that we develop a profound intimacy with our Creator and experience His presence in our lives. Our hearts become illuminated with the light of faith, and we find solace and contentment in our relationship with Allah.
In conclusion, the hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of espousing the remembrance of Allah as it serves as the light that illuminates the heart.
