لاتَنْصَبَنَّ نَفْسَكَ لِحَرْبِ اللّهِ فَلايَدَ لَكَ بِنَقْمَتِهِ ولاغِنى بِكَ عَنْ رَحْمَتِهِ۔
Never declare war against Allah for there is no power that can protect you from His wrath and you can never be free from need for His mercy.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to never engage in a battle or conflict against Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to place ourselves in a position where we challenge the might and power of Allah, as there is no force or strength that can protect us from His wrath.
The word (nasaba) "نَصَبَ" in the Hadith refers to the act of setting oneself up or declaring war against Allah. It implies a deliberate and conscious decision to oppose or challenge the divine authority. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us against such a dangerous path, as it leads to severe consequences and brings about the anger and punishment of Allah.
To understand the gravity of this warning, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 6:93)
And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah or says, 'It has been inspired to me,' while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, 'I will reveal [something] like what Allah revealed.' And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], 'Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allah other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant.'
This verse highlights the severe consequences that await those who fabricate lies about Allah or claim to possess divine knowledge without any authority. It serves as a reminder that Allah's wrath and punishment are inevitable for those who challenge His sovereignty.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that there is no power or strength that can protect us from the wrath of Allah. This echoes the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Hajj, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 22:71)
And they will not find for themselves besides Allah any protector or helper.
This verse reminds us that no matter how powerful or influential we may perceive ourselves to be, ultimately, we are completely dependent on Allah's mercy and protection. We cannot escape our need for His guidance, forgiveness, and mercy. It is only through His mercy that we can find salvation and success.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words serve as a profound reflection on the consequences of challenging Allah's authority and the importance of seeking His mercy and forgiveness. It reminds us to humble ourselves before Allah, acknowledging our limitations and recognizing that our ultimate success lies in submitting to His will.
As Muslims, we should strive to align our actions and intentions with the teachings of Islam, seeking Allah's pleasure and mercy. We should avoid any form of arrogance, rebellion, or opposition to His commands. Instead, we should constantly seek His forgiveness, guidance, and protection, recognizing that it is only through His mercy that we can attain true success in this life and the hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us on the straight path, protect us from the temptation of challenging His authority, and shower us with His infinite mercy and forgiveness.
