Eschew every action that you are in no need of and busy yourself with the affair of the Hereafter, which you must [eventually] face.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to abstain from engaging in actions that are unnecessary and to instead focus on the affairs of the Hereafter, which are of utmost importance. To better understand the profound wisdom behind this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in the Hadith.
The first word to explore is (amal) "عَمَل", which translates to "action" or "deed." This encompasses all types of actions, whether they be physical, verbal, or even thoughts and intentions. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to eschew or avoid those actions that they are (ghina 'anhu) "غِنًى عَنْهُ", meaning they are not in need of or can do without. This implies that Muslims should prioritize their actions and focus on those that are truly necessary and beneficial.
The second part of the Hadith emphasizes the importance of directing one's attention and efforts towards the affairs of the Hereafter. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges Muslims to (ishtaghlou anfusakum) "اشْغَلُوا أنْفُسَكُمْ", which means to occupy or engage oneself. He advises Muslims to occupy themselves with the affairs of the Hereafter, as these are matters that they will inevitably face.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Kahf (18:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us,
Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.
This verse highlights the transient nature of worldly possessions and emphasizes the superiority of enduring good deeds in the sight of Allah.
Additionally, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world. And do good as Allah has done good to you. And desire not corruption in the land. Indeed, Allah does not like corrupters.
This verse encourages Muslims to strive for the Hereafter while also fulfilling their responsibilities in this world. It emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between worldly affairs and the pursuit of the Hereafter.
The exegesis of this Hadith highlights the profound wisdom and guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By advising Muslims to eschew unnecessary actions and focus on the affairs of the Hereafter, he reminds us of the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the ultimate importance of preparing for the eternal life to come. This Hadith serves as a reminder to prioritize our actions and invest our time and efforts in deeds that will benefit us in the Hereafter.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and understanding of the Quran.
