Hadith #7313

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

العِلْمُ يُرْشِدُكَ، والعَمَلُ يَبْلُغُ بِكَ الغايَةَ

which translates to

Knowledge guides you and action takes you to the goal.

This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of both knowledge and action in the journey towards achieving our ultimate purpose in life.

Let us delve deeper into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. (knowledge) "العِلْمُ" refers to the understanding and awareness of religious teachings, principles, and wisdom. It encompasses both theoretical knowledge and practical application. (guides you) "يُرْشِدُكَ" implies that knowledge serves as a guiding light, illuminating the path towards righteousness and leading one away from ignorance and misguidance.

The second part of the Hadith states, (action) "والعَمَلُ" which signifies the implementation of knowledge into practice. It emphasizes the importance of taking proactive steps and engaging in righteous deeds. (takes you to the goal) "يَبْلُغُ بِكَ الغايَةَ" implies that through sincere and consistent action, one can attain the ultimate objective of their existence, which is the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the teachings of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3),

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of combining faith (belief) with righteous actions, as well as encouraging others towards truth and patience.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.

This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has given us the capacity to acquire knowledge and perform righteous actions according to our capabilities. It is through the pursuit of knowledge and the implementation of that knowledge in our actions that we can fulfill our purpose in life.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and act upon it. Knowledge alone is not sufficient; it must be accompanied by action. It is through the combination of knowledge and action that we can attain our ultimate goal, which is the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. He was not only a scholar but also a man of action. His life serves as a perfect example of someone who embodied the teachings of this Hadith. He not only acquired knowledge but also implemented it in his actions, whether it was in the battlefield, in governance, or in his interactions with people.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we can understand that knowledge without action is like a lamp without a flame. It may illuminate the surroundings, but it cannot provide warmth or bring about any change. Similarly, action without knowledge is like a ship without a compass. It may move, but it may not reach its intended destination.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of seeking knowledge and acting upon it. It reminds us that knowledge guides us towards the right path, while action enables us to reach our ultimate goal. As Muslims, we should strive to acquire knowledge, implement it in our actions, and seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all that we do. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to seek knowledge and act righteously.
