مَنْ كَذَبَ أفْسَدَ مُرُوَّتَهُ۔
One who lies corrupts his magnanimity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Liar)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ كَذَبَ أفْسَدَ مُرُوَّتَهُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
One who lies corrupts his magnanimity.
Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (kathaba) "كَذَبَ" means to lie or to fabricate falsehood. The word (afsada) "أفْسَدَ" means to corrupt or spoil. And the word (murawwatah) "مُرُوَّتَهُ" refers to one's magnanimity, honor, or integrity.
To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Mu'minun (23:1-3),
Successful indeed are the believers, who are humble in their prayers, and who turn away from all that is vain, and who are active in giving Zakah.
This verse emphasizes the importance of truthfulness and sincerity in the lives of believers. Lying is a form of vanity and falsehood that contradicts the essence of faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.
This verse highlights the importance of preserving one's honor and integrity by refraining from dishonesty and mockery.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that lying not only damages one's character but also tarnishes their magnanimity and honor. When a person lies, they lose the trust and respect of others. Their reputation is marred, and their credibility is compromised. This loss of integrity can have far-reaching consequences in both personal and social spheres.
For instance, in personal relationships, lying erodes the foundation of trust. When someone is caught in a lie, it becomes difficult for others to believe their words or rely on their promises. This breakdown of trust can lead to strained relationships, misunderstandings, and even the dissolution of bonds.
In the wider society, lying can have detrimental effects on the fabric of trust and cooperation. When individuals engage in falsehoods, it creates an environment of suspicion and skepticism. People become hesitant to rely on one another, and this can hinder progress and unity within communities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to uphold the values of honesty and truthfulness. By doing so, we preserve our magnanimity and honor, and we contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society. Honesty not only strengthens our personal relationships but also fosters trust and cooperation among individuals and communities.
Let us reflect on this profound Hadith and strive to be truthful in our words and actions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to the path of righteousness and protect us from the pitfalls of falsehood. May we always uphold our magnanimity and honor by being people of integrity and truth.
