مَنْ أخْلَصَ النِيَّةَ تَنَزَّهَ عَنِ الدَّنِيَّةِ۔
Whoever makes his intention sincere is purified from vileness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Intention)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ أخْلَصَ النِيَّةَ تَنَزَّهَ عَنِ الدَّنِيَّةِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of sincerity in one's intentions and how it leads to purification from the vileness of worldly desires.
Let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith. The word (akhlasa) "أخْلَصَ" means to make something pure and sincere. It signifies the act of purifying one's intentions from any ulterior motives or desires. The word (niyyah) "النِيَّةَ" refers to one's intention or motive behind an action. It is the driving force that determines the sincerity and righteousness of our deeds. Finally, the word (tanzaha) "تَنَزَّهَ" means to be purified or cleansed. It implies that when one's intentions are sincere, they are freed from the contamination of worldly desires and impurities.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5),
And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.
This verse highlights the importance of sincerity in worship and obedience to Allah. It emphasizes that true religion is based on sincerity and devotion to Allah alone.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mumtahina (60:4), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
There has already been for you an excellent pattern in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, 'Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from whatever you worship other than Allah. We have denied you, and there has appeared between us and you animosity and hatred forever until you believe in Allah alone.'
This verse exemplifies the sincerity of Prophet Ibrahim (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his companions, who disassociated themselves from the false idols and worshipped Allah alone. Their sincerity in their beliefs and actions led to a clear distinction between truth and falsehood.
From these Quranic verses, we can understand that sincerity in our intentions is a fundamental aspect of our faith. It is the key to purifying our hearts and actions from the vileness of worldly desires. When our intentions are solely focused on pleasing Allah and seeking His pleasure, we distance ourselves from the distractions and temptations of this worldly life.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the significance of sincere intentions in this Hadith. By purifying our intentions, we detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world and elevate our actions to a higher spiritual level. When our intentions are sincere, our deeds become a means of attaining closeness to Allah and seeking His pleasure.
This Hadith serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to constantly reflect upon our intentions. We should strive to purify them and ensure that they are solely directed towards pleasing Allah. By doing so, we can transform our actions into acts of worship and elevate our spiritual journey.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of sincerity in our intentions. It teaches us that when we make our intentions pure and sincere, we are cleansed from the vileness of worldly desires. This Hadith aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the significance of sincerity in our worship and devotion to Allah. As Muslims, we should strive to purify our intentions and ensure that they are solely directed towards seeking the pleasure of Allah. May Allah grant us the ability to make our intentions sincere and purify our hearts from the vileness of this world.
