فِرُّوا كُلَّ الفِرارِ مِنَ اللَّئيمِ الأحْمَقِ۔
Flee as far as you can from the foolish, vile one.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Vile)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
فِرُّوا كُلَّ الفِرارِ مِنَ اللَّئيمِ الأحْمَقِ۔
This can be translated as:
Flee as far as you can from the foolish, vile one.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the important words used. The word (firoo) "فِرُّوا" means to flee or run away, indicating the urgency and importance of distancing oneself from the subject of the Hadith. (kulla) "كُلَّ" means every or all, emphasizing the comprehensive nature of the command. (al-firar) "الفِرارِ" refers to fleeing or running away, highlighting the need to escape from the presence or influence of the individual being described. (al-la'eem) "اللَّئيمِ" means foolish or wicked, indicating the moral depravity and ignorance of the person in question. Finally, (al-ahmaq) "الأحْمَقِ" means vile or ignorant, further emphasizing the despicable nature of this individual.
To shed light on the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-A'raf (7:175):
And recite to them the story of the one to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them; so Satan pursued him, and he became of those who went astray.
This verse highlights the consequences of associating with those who are foolish and wicked. Just as Satan pursued the individual who detached himself from the signs of Allah, we too should flee from the company of such individuals to protect ourselves from their negative influence.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan (25:27), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Day of Judgment, saying:
And the Day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands [in regret] he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'
This verse highlights the regret and remorse of those who followed the wrong path and did not seek guidance from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). It serves as a reminder to Muslims to distance themselves from those who are foolish and wicked, and instead seek the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith urges us to flee from the presence of the foolish, vile individual. This command is not limited to physical distance, but also encompasses distancing ourselves from their ideas, actions, and influence. By doing so, we protect ourselves from their negative traits and prevent ourselves from being led astray.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see its relevance in our daily lives. We encounter individuals who may possess qualities of foolishness and wickedness, whether it be in their speech, actions, or character. It is our duty as Muslims to recognize these individuals and take the necessary steps to distance ourselves from them. By doing so, we safeguard our faith, protect our hearts from corruption, and ensure that we are on the path of righteousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder to Muslims to flee from the presence and influence of those who are foolish and vile. By seeking guidance from the Quran and reflecting on its teachings, we can understand the importance of distancing ourselves from such individuals. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to recognize and avoid the company of those who may lead us astray.
