أعْظَمُ البَلاءِ اِنْقِطاعُ الرَّجاءِ۔
The greatest affliction is the severance of hope.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hope In [The Mercy Of] Allah And [In] Others)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The greatest affliction is the severance of hope.
This impactful Hadith highlights the immense importance of hope in our lives as Muslims. To better understand the depth of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.
The word (balaa) "بَلاءِ" refers to affliction, trial, or hardship. It encompasses the challenges and difficulties that we face in our lives. These trials can come in various forms, such as physical, emotional, or spiritual hardships. They test our patience, resilience, and faith in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
The word (inqitaau) "اِنْقِطاعُ" means severance or cutting off. It signifies the complete cessation or loss of something. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the severance of hope, which is the ultimate tragedy for a believer.
Hope is an essential element of our faith as Muslims. It is the driving force that keeps us motivated and optimistic in the face of adversity. It is through hope that we find solace and strength to overcome challenges and strive for success. The severance of hope, therefore, implies a state of despair and hopelessness, which is the greatest affliction one can experience.
To further comprehend the significance of hope in Islam, let us turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:87),
O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people.
This verse emphasizes the importance of never losing hope in Allah's mercy and assistance. Despairing of relief from Allah is a characteristic of those who lack faith. As Muslims, we are encouraged to maintain hope in Allah's infinite wisdom and His ability to alleviate our hardships.
Another verse that highlights the significance of hope is found in Surah Az-Zumar (39:53), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'
This verse reassures us that no matter how grave our sins may be, we should never lose hope in Allah's mercy. He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful, and He is always ready to accept our repentance and forgive us. This serves as a reminder that hope should always be present in our hearts, even in times of spiritual struggle.
Now, let us reflect on the consequences of the severance of hope. When a person loses hope, they become vulnerable to despair, depression, and a loss of purpose in life. They may feel overwhelmed by their trials and find it difficult to see a way out. This state of hopelessness can lead to a downward spiral, affecting their mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
On the other hand, maintaining hope in the face of afflictions brings about numerous benefits. It strengthens our faith, increases our resilience, and enables us to persevere through hardships. Hope allows us to see beyond our current circumstances and believe in the promise of a better future. It motivates us to seek solutions, make positive changes, and trust in Allah's plan for us.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense value of hope in our lives as Muslims. It warns us about the grave consequences of losing hope and encourages us to always maintain a positive outlook, even in the face of the most challenging trials. By anchoring our hope in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we can find solace, strength, and guidance to navigate through the difficulties of life. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us unwavering hope and steadfastness in our faith.
