(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
ثَوابُ الصَّبْرِ أعْلَى الثَّوابِ۔
This can be translated as,
The reward for patience is the loftiest reward.
This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense value and significance of patience in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "Thawab" refers to the reward or recompense that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grants to His servants for their righteous actions. "Sabr" denotes patience, perseverance, and steadfastness in the face of hardships, trials, and tribulations.
The importance of patience is emphasized throughout the Quran, and numerous verses support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153),
O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
This verse highlights the connection between patience and seeking assistance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Patience is not only a virtue but also a means to draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seek His support.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran (3:200), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures the believers,
O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of patience in achieving success in this life and the Hereafter. It reminds Muslims that patience is not limited to enduring difficulties but also encompasses remaining steadfast in obedience to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His commands.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that the reward for patience is not only significant but also the highest among all rewards. When a person exercises patience in the face of trials and tribulations, they demonstrate their trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and their submission to His will. This act of patience is not only rewarded in this world but also in the Hereafter.
For example, when Prophet Job (Ayub) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) faced severe afflictions, he displayed immense patience and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As a result, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rewarded him with a double portion of what he had lost and restored his health and wealth (Quran 38:41-44). This exemplifies how patience is not only rewarded but also leads to the alleviation of hardships and the restoration of blessings.
Moreover, patience is not limited to enduring hardships but also encompasses restraining oneself from sinful actions. In Surah Yusuf (12:53), when Prophet Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was seduced by the wife of his master, he displayed immense patience and refused to succumb to temptation. As a result, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protected him from falling into sin and eventually granted him a high position and honor.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the immense reward and significance of patience in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Patience is not only a virtue but also a means of seeking help from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and attaining success in this life and the Hereafter. It is through patience that believers demonstrate their trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and their submission to His will. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate patience in our lives and may He reward us with the loftiest rewards.
