Hadith #5728

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Truthfulness is the garb of certitude (or of the God-wary).

The word (truthfulness) "صِدْقُ" refers to honesty, sincerity, and the absence of falsehood. It is the quality of speaking and acting in accordance with reality and avoiding deception. The word (garb) "بَاسُ" signifies clothing or attire, which is worn to cover and protect oneself. And finally, (certitude or the God-wary) "ٱليَقِينِ" refers to a state of firm belief and conviction, as well as a consciousness of Allah's presence and fear of His displeasure.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truthfulness in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Tawbah (9:119), Allah says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah and be with those who are true.

This verse encourages Muslims to be in the company of those who are truthful, highlighting the significance of truthfulness in our relationships and interactions.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:119), Allah describes Prophet Jesus (Isa) as saying,

And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.

This verse emphasizes the truthfulness of Prophet Jesus (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and his role as a witness to the people.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that truthfulness is not only a moral virtue but also a means to attain certitude and piety. It strengthens our relationships, fosters unity and harmony within the Muslim community, and promotes justice and fairness. When we are truthful, we become reliable and trustworthy individuals, and our actions reflect the principles of Islam.
