Hadith #8047

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

غَدْرُ الرَّجُلِ مَسََبَّةٌ عَلَيْهِ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

The treachery of a man is a disgrace upon him.

Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.

The word (ghadr) "غَدْرُ" refers to treachery or betrayal. It signifies the act of deceiving or betraying someone's trust. Treachery is a grave sin that tarnishes one's character and reputation. It is an act that goes against the principles of honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness, which are highly valued in Islam.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against treachery in the Quran, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling one's promises and maintaining trust. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 17:34)

And fulfill [every] commitment. Indeed, the commitment is ever [that about which one will be] questioned.

This verse highlights the significance of honoring one's commitments and not betraying the trust placed upon us.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 5:1)

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts. Lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except for that which is recited to you [in this Qur'an] - hunting not being permitted while you are in the state of ihram. Indeed, Allah ordains what He intends.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling contracts and agreements, highlighting the gravity of treachery.

Imam Ali's statement,

The treachery of a man is a disgrace upon him,

serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of betraying someone's trust. When a person engages in treacherous behavior, they not only harm others but also bring shame upon themselves. Treachery erodes the foundation of trust in relationships and tarnishes one's reputation.
