— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Virtues And Vices)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his family (Ahl al-Bayt), and his companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفضيلة غلبة العادة" which translates to
Virtue is overcoming [one’s bad] habit.
This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of striving for excellence and righteousness by conquering our negative tendencies and habits.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of its key words. (al-fadilah) "الفضيلة" refers to virtue, excellence, or moral goodness. It encompasses all noble qualities and righteous actions that elevate a person's character. (ghalabah) "غلبة" means to overcome, prevail, or conquer. It implies the act of gaining mastery over something, in this case, one's bad habits. (al-'adah) "العادة" refers to habits or customary behavior that becomes ingrained in an individual's character.
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of striving for virtue and righteousness in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah says,
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).
This verse encourages Muslims to prioritize righteousness and moral excellence in their lives.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Asr (103:3), Allah states,
Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds and advise each other to truth and advise each other to patience.
This verse highlights the significance of performing good deeds and encouraging others towards righteousness. It emphasizes the need to overcome negative habits and replace them with virtuous actions.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that true virtue lies in our ability to conquer our bad habits and replace them with good ones. It is not enough to simply possess knowledge or acknowledge the importance of righteousness. We must actively strive to overcome our negative tendencies and transform ourselves into better individuals.
For instance, if one has a habit of lying, the virtue lies in overcoming this habit by speaking the truth consistently. Similarly, if one struggles with anger, the virtue lies in controlling and channeling that anger into patience and forgiveness. By conquering our bad habits, we not only improve ourselves but also positively impact those around us.
The consequences of adhering to this Hadith are profound. By overcoming our bad habits, we purify our souls and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We become individuals who are known for their integrity, self-discipline, and moral excellence. Our actions reflect the teachings of Islam, and we become beacons of guidance for others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense wisdom and knowledge possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His deep understanding of human nature and spirituality allows us to gain insights into our own struggles and the path towards self-improvement. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) words serve as a constant reminder for Muslims to continuously strive for virtue and overcome their bad habits.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true virtue lies in overcoming our bad habits. By conquering our negative tendencies and replacing them with righteous actions, we strive for excellence and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to continuously strive for self-improvement and moral excellence, reflecting the teachings of Islam in their daily lives.
