Hadith #8884

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لايَنْفَعُ قَوْلٌ بِغَيْرِ عَمَل۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of not just speaking about good deeds, but actually putting them into practice. It highlights the fact that mere words without corresponding actions are of no benefit.

To delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith, let us analyze the key words used. The word (qawl) "قَوْلٌ" refers to speech or words. It encompasses both verbal expressions and written statements. The word (bi-ghayri) "بِغَيْرِ" means without or lacking. And the word (amal) "عَمَل۔" refers to action or deed.

This Hadith aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of actions in conjunction with words. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah says, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse highlights that belief alone is not sufficient for salvation. It must be accompanied by righteous deeds. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah says, (Quran 61:2-3)

O you who have believed, why do you say what you do not do? Great is hatred in the sight of Allah that you say what you do not do.
