بِالسَّخاءِ تُزانُ الأفْعالُ۔
Through generosity, actions become beautiful.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Generosity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالسَّخاءِ تُزانُ الأفْعالُ۔" This Hadith emphasizes the importance of generosity in beautifying our actions. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this enlightening Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sakhā) "سَخَاء" in Arabic refers to generosity, liberality, and magnanimity. It encompasses the act of giving freely and abundantly, without expecting anything in return. This virtue is highly regarded in Islam, as it reflects the selflessness and compassion that should be present in the hearts of Muslims.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the significance of generosity in the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 261, Allah says,
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense rewards that await those who are generous and spend their wealth in the path of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 18, Allah states,
Indeed, the men who practice charity and the women who practice charity and [they who] have loaned Allah a goodly loan - it will be multiplied for them, and they will have a noble reward.
This verse emphasizes that acts of charity and generosity will be multiplied and rewarded abundantly by Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that through the act of generosity, our actions are adorned and made beautiful. When we give without expecting anything in return, we purify our intentions and demonstrate our love for Allah and His creation. Generosity is not limited to material possessions; it also encompasses acts of kindness, compassion, and forgiveness.
For example, when we forgive someone who has wronged us, we display generosity of the heart. Allah says in Surah Al-Qur'an, verse 42:40,
And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due] from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers.
By forgiving others, we emulate the generosity of Allah, who forgives His servants and grants them mercy.
Moreover, the act of giving can have far-reaching consequences. When we are generous, we inspire others to follow suit and create a ripple effect of goodness in society. Our generosity can uplift the spirits of those in need, provide them with hope, and alleviate their suffering. It is through acts of generosity that we can contribute to the betterment of our communities and fulfill our duty as Muslims.
Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of incorporating generosity into our daily lives. It is not enough to simply perform good deeds; we must do so with a spirit of generosity and selflessness. By doing so, we beautify our actions, purify our intentions, and strive to attain the pleasure of Allah.
May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to be generous and may He accept our acts of kindness and charity. May we continuously strive to embody the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his noble family, and his righteous companions.
