مَنْ لَمْ يُحْسِنْ ظَنَّهُ اِسْتَوْحَشَ مِنْ كُلِّ أحَد۔
One who does not think positively of others alienates himself from everyone.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Conjecture)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who does not think positively of others alienates himself from everyone.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The key words in this Hadith are (think positively of others) "يُحْسِنْ ظَنَّهُ" and (alienates himself) "اِسْتَوْحَشَ". "يُحْسِنْ ظَنَّهُ" refers to having a good opinion or thinking positively of others. It is a mindset that assumes the best about people, giving them the benefit of the doubt. On the other hand, "اِسْتَوْحَشَ" means to isolate oneself or to feel estranged from others.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of having a good opinion of others in several verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin.
This verse encourages Muslims to refrain from making negative assumptions about others, as it can lead to sin. It highlights the need for a positive mindset that promotes unity and harmony within the community.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
Why did not the believers, men and women, when you heard it (the slander), think good of their own people and say: 'This is an obvious lie'?
This verse refers to an incident where false accusations were made against the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ). The believers were reminded to think positively and reject baseless accusations. This teaches us the importance of not hastily judging others and assuming the best about them.
Now, let us reflect on the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. When we constantly harbor negative thoughts and suspicions about others, we create a barrier between ourselves and the people around us. This negativity isolates us and prevents us from forming meaningful connections and relationships. It breeds mistrust and animosity, leading to a toxic environment within the community.
On the other hand, when we think positively of others, we open ourselves up to the possibility of building strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. By assuming the best about people, we create an atmosphere of trust and understanding. This positive mindset allows us to see the good in others, even in challenging situations, and helps us to resolve conflicts with empathy and compassion.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of cultivating a positive mindset. His words serve as a reminder for Muslims to strive towards unity and harmony within the community by thinking positively of others. By doing so, we can break down the walls of isolation and build bridges of understanding and love.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the significance of having a good opinion of others. It warns against the consequences of harboring negative thoughts, which can lead to isolation and alienation. By thinking positively of others, we create an environment of trust and unity, fostering strong relationships within the Muslim community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to always think positively of others and strive for unity and harmony.
