(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ حَسُنَ خُلْقُهُ سَهُلَتْ لَهُ طَرُقُهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of good character and its impact on one's life. Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (hasuna) "حَسُنَ" in the Hadith refers to having good or excellent character. It encompasses traits such as kindness, honesty, patience, humility, and justice. It is the embodiment of the teachings of Islam and the Prophetic tradition. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages Muslims to cultivate and adorn themselves with good character in numerous verses of the Quran.

In Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah says,

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exceptional character of the Prophet Muhammad (), who serves as the epitome of moral excellence for all Muslims. His character was so remarkable that it attracted people towards Islam. Similarly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his outstanding character, which earned him the title of (Lion of Allah) "Asadullah".

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah states,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility lies in righteousness and good character. It is not based on one's lineage, wealth, or worldly status. Muslims should strive to excel in their character to attain true honor in the sight of Allah.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further states, (sahulat lahu tariquhu) "سَهُلَتْ لَهُ طَرُقُهُ", which means that the ways of a person with good character become easy. This implies that when one possesses good character, they will experience ease and facilitation in their life's journey. This ease can manifest in various aspects of life, including relationships, work, and personal growth.

In Surah Al-Inshirah (94:5-6), Allah says,

Indeed, with hardship, there is ease. Indeed, with hardship, there is ease.

This verse reminds Muslims that after every difficulty, there is relief and ease. When a person possesses good character, they are more likely to handle challenges with patience, resilience, and wisdom. Their positive attitude and behavior attract blessings and opportunities, making their paths smoother and more manageable.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:69), Allah states,

And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.

This verse highlights that those who strive to improve their character and follow the path of righteousness will be guided by Allah. They will be blessed with divine assistance and guidance, making their journey in life more straightforward and fulfilling.

The consequences of possessing good character are far-reaching. Individuals with excellent character are respected and admired by others. They become a source of inspiration and role models for their communities. Moreover, their positive influence extends beyond their immediate surroundings, impacting society at large. Their actions and words reflect the teachings of Islam, attracting others towards the beauty and truth of the religion.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of continuously striving to improve our character. It is not enough to merely perform religious rituals; we must also embody the teachings of Islam in our interactions and conduct. By doing so, we can experience the ease and blessings that come with possessing good character, and in turn, inspire others to do the same.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate and maintain excellent character, and may He make our paths in life easy and filled with His blessings.
