كَيْفَ يَصْبِرُ عَنِ الشَّهْوَةِ مَنْ لَمْ تُعِنْهُ العِصْمَةُ؟!
How can one who is not aided by [divine] protection refrain from lust?.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic word (al-shahwah) "الشهوة" in the Hadith refers to desires or lustful inclinations. It encompasses a wide range of human desires, including but not limited to physical desires. The term (al-'ismah) "العِصْمَة" translates to divine protection or infallibility, indicating the divine assistance and guidance that helps individuals refrain from succumbing to their desires and temptations.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking His protection and guidance to overcome temptations and desires. In Surah Yusuf (12:24), Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) sought refuge in Allah from the advances of the wife of Al-Aziz, demonstrating the need for divine protection in resisting temptations. Similarly, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:201), believers are encouraged to seek refuge in Allah from the whispers of Satan, who tries to incite desires and lead people astray.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this profound Hadith highlights the essential role of divine protection in enabling individuals to control their desires. Without the assistance of divine guidance and protection, it becomes exceedingly challenging for a person to resist the allure of their desires and maintain moral integrity. The Imam's statement underscores the inherent vulnerability of human beings to succumb to temptations without the support of divine assistance.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the significance of seeking Allah's protection and guidance in navigating the challenges posed by worldly desires. By strengthening their connection with Allah and striving to uphold piety and righteousness, believers can fortify themselves against the seductive pull of their desires. Imam Ali's profound insight serves as a poignant reminder of the pivotal role of divine assistance in fostering self-discipline and moral uprightness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful admonition for Muslims to recognize the crucial role of divine protection in overcoming temptations and desires. By acknowledging their dependence on Allah's guidance and seeking His assistance, believers can aspire to emulate the lofty example of the Ahl al-Bayt in upholding moral excellence and spiritual resilience. May we all strive to cultivate a steadfast connection with Allah and seek His refuge in times of trial and temptation.
