(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Sagacious)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

عَزيمَةُ الكَيِّسِ وجِدُّهُ لإصْلاحِ المَعادِ، والاِسْتِكْثارِ مِنَ الزّادِ۔

This can be translated as:

The determination and effort of the sagacious one is for the improvement of his Hereafter and for acquiring more provisions [for it].

Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (determination) "عَزيمَةُ" refers to a strong resolve and unwavering commitment towards a goal. It signifies the steadfastness and perseverance of an individual in pursuing their objectives. The term (the sagacious one) "الكَيِّسِ" refers to a person who possesses wisdom, intelligence, and foresight. Such an individual is not only knowledgeable but also applies their knowledge in a practical and effective manner.

The Hadith emphasizes that the determination and effort of the sagacious one are directed towards two main objectives. Firstly, it is for the improvement of their Hereafter. This implies that the sagacious individual recognizes the transient nature of this worldly life and focuses on preparing for the eternal life in the Hereafter. They understand the importance of fulfilling their religious obligations, seeking forgiveness for their sins, and engaging in acts of worship that bring them closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This is in line with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201), where Allah says,

And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, grant us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

Secondly, the determination and effort of the sagacious one are aimed at acquiring more provisions for the Hereafter. This refers to the accumulation of good deeds, righteous actions, and acts of kindness that will benefit them in the Hereafter. The sagacious individual understands that their actions in this world will have consequences in the next. They strive to increase their provisions by performing acts of charity, helping those in need, and spreading goodness in society. This is in line with the Quranic verse in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), where Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety). So fear Me, O you of understanding.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of having a clear vision and purpose in life. It encourages Muslims to be proactive in their pursuit of righteousness and to constantly strive for self-improvement. The sagacious individual is not content with mere complacency but seeks to excel in their devotion to Allah and their service to humanity.

The consequences of embodying the qualities mentioned in this Hadith are immense. By prioritizing the improvement of the Hereafter and acquiring provisions for it, Muslims can attain a higher level of spirituality and closeness to Allah. They can find solace and contentment in knowing that their efforts are not in vain and that they are working towards a greater purpose. Moreover, their actions will serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for others, leading to a positive ripple effect in society.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the exemplary character of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His knowledge, wisdom, and determination were unparalleled. He dedicated his life to the service of Allah and the betterment of humanity. His actions and teachings continue to inspire Muslims across the world, serving as a beacon of guidance and enlightenment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of determination and effort in the pursuit of a righteous life. It reminds Muslims to prioritize the improvement of their Hereafter and to strive for the acquisition of provisions for it. By embodying the qualities of the sagacious one, we can lead a purposeful and fulfilling life, both in this world and the Hereafter. May Allah grant us the wisdom and strength to embody these qualities and may He bless us with success in our endeavors.
