بِالإحْسانِ وتَغَمُّدِ الذُّنُوبِ بِالغُفْرانِ يَعْظُمُ المَجْدُ۔
Through kindness and covering faults with forgiveness, eminence increases.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the virtues of kindness and forgiveness. Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith and explore their significance in light of the Quran.
The word (ihsan) "إحْسان" in Arabic refers to acts of kindness, excellence, and going above and beyond what is expected. It encompasses acts of goodness and benevolence towards others, whether they are deserving or not. This concept of ihsan is beautifully captured in the Quran in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.
The word (taghammud) "تَغَمُّدِ" in the Hadith means to cover or conceal faults. It signifies the act of forgiving others and not exposing their shortcomings or mistakes. This concept is echoed in the Quran in Surah An-Nur, verse 22, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Let them pardon and overlook. Would you not love for Allah to forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
The word (dhunub) "ذُّنُوبِ" in the Hadith refers to sins or faults committed by individuals. It highlights the imperfections and mistakes that we all inevitably make. However, the Hadith encourages us to cover these faults with forgiveness, rather than exposing and magnifying them.
The word (ghufran) "غُفْرانِ" in the Hadith means forgiveness. It signifies the act of pardoning and absolving others of their wrongdoings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the Ultimate Forgiver, as mentioned in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 199, where He says,
Then race to [all that is] good. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you forth [for judgement] all together. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of this Hadith. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that by practicing kindness and forgiveness, we can elevate ourselves and increase our eminence in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we treat others with kindness, we embody the teachings of Islam and emulate the character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who was known for his compassion and mercy towards all.
By covering the faults of others with forgiveness, we demonstrate our understanding of human fallibility and our willingness to overlook the mistakes of others. This act of forgiveness not only reflects our own humility but also allows for reconciliation and the mending of relationships. It is a means of fostering unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, the practice of kindness and forgiveness has far-reaching consequences. When we extend kindness to others, we inspire them to do the same, creating a ripple effect of goodness in society. Similarly, when we forgive others, we open the door for their repentance and spiritual growth. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) loves those who forgive, as mentioned in Surah Al-Imran, verse 134, where He says,
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of practicing kindness and forgiveness in our daily lives. By embodying these virtues, we not only increase our own eminence but also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to be people of ihsan and forgiveness, following the example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody these virtues and increase in His love and mercy.
