— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Mercy And Compassion)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ لَمْ يَرْحَمِ النَّاسَ مَنَعَهُ اللّهُ رَحْمَتَهُ۔

This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of showing mercy and compassion towards others. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (rahmah) "رَحْمَةَ" in this Hadith refers to the mercy and compassion that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon His creation. It is a divine attribute that encompasses forgiveness, kindness, and benevolence. The word (mana'a) "مَنَعَ" means to withhold or prevent. Therefore, the Hadith conveys that if a person fails to show mercy to others, Allah will withhold His mercy from that individual.

This Hadith is in perfect harmony with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasize the importance of showing mercy and compassion towards others. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Anfal (8:69),

But [O Muhammad], pardon them and overlook [their misdeeds]. Indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse encourages forgiveness and pardoning others, even in the face of wrongdoing. It highlights the importance of showing mercy and compassion, as it is an act that is beloved to Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

Taqwa, often translated as piety or God-consciousness, encompasses various aspects, including showing mercy and compassion towards others. By practicing Taqwa, one develops a deep sense of empathy and kindness towards fellow human beings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the significance of showing mercy to others. He exemplified this quality throughout his life, even in the most challenging circumstances. One notable example is when he spared the life of his opponent, Amr ibn Abd Wudd, during the Battle of Khandaq. Despite having the upper hand, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) showed mercy and spared his enemy's life, demonstrating the true essence of compassion.

The consequences of failing to show mercy to others are severe, as highlighted in this Hadith. When a person neglects to display compassion, they distance themselves from the mercy of Allah. This deprivation of divine mercy can have profound spiritual and worldly consequences. It can lead to a hardened heart, strained relationships, and a lack of blessings in one's life.

Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of embodying mercy and compassion in their interactions with others. It is not enough to simply believe in the mercy of Allah; we must actively manifest it in our daily lives. By showing kindness, forgiveness, and empathy towards others, we not only fulfill a fundamental Islamic principle but also open the doors to Allah's abundant mercy and blessings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to prioritize mercy and compassion in their interactions with others. It aligns perfectly with the teachings of the Quran, which emphasize the significance of showing kindness and forgiveness. By embodying these qualities, we not only fulfill our duty as Muslims but also invite the boundless mercy of Allah into our lives. May Allah grant us the ability to be merciful and compassionate towards others, and may He shower His mercy upon us.
