(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ مِنْ أحسَنِ الشِّيَمِ۔
This can be translated as,
Keeping ties with near relatives is one of the best practices.
In this exegesis, we will explore the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
First, let us delve into the important words of this Hadith. "صِلَةُ الرَّحِمِ" refers to maintaining and strengthening the bonds of kinship. "صِلَةُ" comes from the root word "صَلَاةُ" which means to connect or join together. It signifies establishing and nurturing relationships with our relatives, both immediate and extended. "الرَّحِمِ" refers to the womb or the family ties that connect us to our relatives. It encompasses the concept of mercy, compassion, and love within the family.
The significance of maintaining ties with our relatives is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa (4:1),
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.
This verse highlights the unity of humanity and the importance of recognizing our common origin. It also emphasizes the sanctity of the womb, which symbolizes the family ties that bind us together.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:23-24), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands,
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'
These verses emphasize the importance of showing kindness and respect to our parents. It extends to the broader concept of maintaining good relations with our relatives, as they are an extension of our family.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that keeping ties with our near relatives is not just a recommended practice, but one of the best practices. This means that it holds immense rewards and blessings in this world and the hereafter. By maintaining strong bonds with our relatives, we foster a sense of unity, love, and support within our families. It strengthens the fabric of society and promotes harmony among individuals.
When we actively engage in maintaining ties with our relatives, we create a ripple effect of positivity. Our actions inspire others to do the same, leading to a cycle of love and compassion within our families and communities. It motivates us to prioritize the well-being and happiness of our relatives, leading to a more cohesive and caring society.
Conversely, neglecting our family ties can have detrimental consequences. It can lead to broken relationships, misunderstandings, and a sense of isolation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Muhammad (47:22-23),
So will you not remember? And whoever turns away after that - they are the defiantly disobedient.
Neglecting our relatives goes against the teachings of Islam and can result in spiritual and emotional distance from our loved ones.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to strengthen our relationships with our near relatives. We can do this by regularly reaching out to them, visiting them, and supporting them in times of need. We should prioritize forgiveness, understanding, and empathy in our interactions with them. By doing so, we not only fulfill a religious obligation but also contribute to the well-being and happiness of our families and communities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of maintaining ties with our near relatives. It is one of the best practices in Islam, as emphasized by the Quranic verses that highlight the unity of humanity and the sanctity of the family. By actively nurturing these relationships, we contribute to the formation of a loving and supportive community. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to fulfill this duty and bless us with strong and harmonious family ties.
