فِي الزَّمانِ اَلْغِيَرُ (اَلْعِبَرُ)۔
In time there are vicissitudes (or lessons [to be learnt]).
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Important Events)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.
The Arabic word (az-zaman) "الزمان" in the provided Hadith refers to time or the passage of time. It encompasses the various stages and phases that occur in the course of human existence. The word (al-ghiyar) "الغير" has multiple meanings, including vicissitudes, changes, or lessons to be learned.
This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the fact that time is not stagnant or constant, but rather it is characterized by constant change and fluctuation. It reminds us that life is full of ups and downs, challenges and opportunities, and it is through these vicissitudes that we can learn valuable lessons.
The Quran provides numerous verses that support this concept of the ever-changing nature of time and the lessons to be learned from it. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:185):
Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse reminds us that life is temporary and fleeting. It is a test, and the true reward and compensation will be given in the Hereafter. The challenges and changes we face in this world serve as reminders of the transient nature of life and the need to focus on our ultimate goal of attaining Paradise.
Another verse that supports the concept of lessons to be learned from the vicissitudes of time is found in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155):
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes that trials and difficulties are an inevitable part of life. They serve as tests of our faith and patience. Through these challenges, we have the opportunity to grow spiritually, develop resilience, and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is during these times of hardship that we can learn valuable lessons and draw closer to our Creator.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that the changes and challenges we face in life are not random or meaningless. They are part of a greater plan designed by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to test and teach us. It is through these vicissitudes that we can learn important lessons about ourselves, our faith, and our purpose in this world.
For example, when faced with a loss, such as the death of a loved one or a financial setback, we are reminded of the temporary nature of worldly possessions and the need to focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. These experiences can motivate us to reflect on our priorities, seek forgiveness, and strive to improve ourselves.
Similarly, when we experience success or blessings, it is important to recognize them as gifts from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and express gratitude. These moments of abundance can also serve as opportunities to help others, share our blessings, and cultivate humility.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that time is not static, but rather it is characterized by constant change and fluctuation. The vicissitudes and challenges we face in life are not meaningless, but rather they serve as valuable lessons and tests of our faith. By reflecting on these lessons, we can grow spiritually, develop resilience, and strive to attain the ultimate reward of Paradise. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand and learn from the vicissitudes of time, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
