غايَةُ الْحَياءِ أنْ يَسْتَحْيِيَ الْمَرْءُ مِنْ نَفْسِهِ۔
The pinnacle of modesty is for a man to feel ashamed of himself.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The pinnacle of modesty is for a man to feel ashamed of himself.
This wise utterance emphasizes the importance of modesty and humility in the character of a believer. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (hayaa) "حَياء" in Arabic, which is translated as "modesty" in English, encompasses a range of meanings. It refers to a sense of shame or bashfulness that prevents a person from engaging in actions that are morally wrong or socially inappropriate. It is a quality that stems from a deep awareness of one's own faults and a desire to avoid anything that may tarnish one's character.
The Hadith highlights that the pinnacle of modesty is when a person feels ashamed of themselves. This means that true modesty goes beyond external appearances and extends to the inner self. It is not merely about how one presents themselves to others, but about recognizing and rectifying one's own flaws and shortcomings.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that emphasize the importance of modesty and self-awareness. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:26), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best.
This verse reminds us that true modesty is not just about physical clothing, but also about adorning ourselves with righteousness and good character.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility and honor lies in righteousness, not in worldly status or external appearances.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement encourages us to reflect upon our own actions and intentions. It reminds us to constantly strive for self-improvement and to hold ourselves accountable for our behavior. When we feel a sense of shame or regret for our wrongdoings, it is a sign of a sincere heart and a desire to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
This Hadith also serves as a reminder that true modesty is not limited to our interactions with others, but extends to our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a recognition of our own weaknesses and a constant striving to please our Creator. When we feel ashamed of our sins and shortcomings, it motivates us to seek repentance and to strive for a higher level of righteousness.
The consequences of embodying this level of modesty are profound. It leads to a sense of humility and gratitude towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as we recognize that any good we possess is from Him, and any wrong we commit is our own doing. It also fosters a sense of empathy and compassion towards others, as we understand the struggles and imperfections that we all share as human beings.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that true modesty goes beyond external appearances and encompasses a deep sense of self-awareness and humility. It reminds us to constantly strive for self-improvement and to hold ourselves accountable for our actions. By embodying this level of modesty, we can cultivate a sincere and humble relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and foster a compassionate and empathetic attitude towards others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody true modesty in all aspects of our lives.
