(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "التَّوَكُّلُ بِضاعَةٌ۔" which translates to
Trusting in Allah is an asset.
This thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance and value of placing our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives.
The word (tawakkul) "تَوَكُّل" comes from the root word (wakala) "وَكَلَ", which means to entrust or rely upon someone. Tawakkul refers to relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) wholeheartedly, knowing that He is the ultimate provider and sustainer of all things. It is an act of complete submission and surrender to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), acknowledging that He is the best planner and the one who controls all outcomes.
The concept of tawakkul is beautifully emphasized in the Quran. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:61)
And put your trust in Allah if you are believers indeed
This verse encourages Muslims to place their trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) as a sign of true faith. It reminds us that our reliance should be solely on Him, rather than on worldly possessions or human efforts.
Another verse that supports the concept of tawakkul is found in Surah At-Talaq, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 65:3)
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him
This verse reassures us that when we place our trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), He is enough to fulfill our needs and protect us from harm. It reminds us that true reliance lies in seeking Allah's help and guidance, rather than relying solely on our own capabilities.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Trusting in Allah is an asset,
carries profound wisdom and practical implications. When we trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we free ourselves from unnecessary worries and anxieties. We understand that our efforts alone cannot guarantee success, and that true success lies in aligning our actions with the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) does not mean we sit idle and expect miracles to happen. Rather, it means that we put in our best efforts while recognizing that the ultimate outcome is in the hands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We strive for excellence, but we do not become attached to the results. We understand that success and failure are both tests from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and we trust that whatever He decrees is ultimately for our own good.
Trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) also brings about a sense of peace and contentment in our hearts. When we rely on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we let go of the need to control every aspect of our lives. We accept that Allah's plans are far greater than our own, and we find solace in knowing that He is the best of planners.
Furthermore, trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) strengthens our relationship with Him. It deepens our faith and reliance on His divine wisdom. It allows us to experience His mercy and blessings in ways we may not have anticipated. When we trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we open ourselves up to His guidance, protection, and provision.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Trusting in Allah is an asset,
reminds us of the importance of placing our complete reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives. It encourages us to let go of our worries and anxieties, and to trust that Allah's plans are far greater than our own. By trusting in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), we find peace, contentment, and a deeper connection with our Creator. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to truly trust in Him and rely on His infinite wisdom and mercy.
