اَلعَقْلُ قُرْبَةٌ، الحُمْقُ غُرْبَةٌ۔
Intelligence is closeness, foolishness is estrangement.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Intelligence is closeness, foolishness is estrangement.
This beautiful Hadith highlights the significance of intellect and its impact on our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the words used in this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (intelligence) "عَقْلُ" refers to the faculty of reason and understanding. It encompasses the ability to comprehend, analyze, and make sound judgments. It is through intelligence that we gain knowledge and wisdom, enabling us to navigate through life's challenges. The transliteration of this word is "‘aql."
On the other hand, (foolishness) "حُمْقُ" signifies the lack of intellect and wisdom. It represents ignorance, irrationality, and the inability to make sensible decisions. The transliteration of this word is "humaq."
To understand the significance of intelligence and foolishness, we turn to the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant. Intelligence enables us to recognize the truth, differentiate between right and wrong, and make informed choices.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Anfal (8:22), Allah states,
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
This verse emphasizes the importance of utilizing our intellect and reasoning abilities. It is through intelligence that we can comprehend the signs of Allah in the universe and fulfill our purpose as His creation.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the profound connection between intelligence and closeness to Allah. When we utilize our intellect to seek knowledge, understand His guidance, and make righteous choices, we draw closer to Allah. Our intelligence becomes a means of attaining His pleasure and developing a deep spiritual connection with Him.
Conversely, foolishness leads to estrangement from Allah. When we neglect the use of our intellect, make irrational decisions, and remain ignorant of His guidance, we distance ourselves from Him. Foolishness blinds us to the truth and hinders our spiritual growth. In Surah Yunus (10:100), Allah warns,
And it is not for a soul to believe except by permission of Allah, and He will place defilement upon those who will not use reason.
This verse emphasizes that those who reject reason and fail to utilize their intellect will be deprived of true faith and guidance.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge and the cultivation of wisdom. By utilizing our intellect, we can understand the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah, apply them in our lives, and draw closer to Allah. Intelligence enables us to make informed decisions, avoid sinful actions, and strive for righteousness.
Moreover, this Hadith highlights the consequences of neglecting our intellect. Foolishness leads to ignorance, poor decision-making, and spiritual distance from Allah. It is a barrier to growth and development in both worldly and spiritual matters. By reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are encouraged to seek knowledge, develop their intellect, and strive for closeness to Allah through wisdom and understanding.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of intelligence and its impact on our relationship with Allah. By utilizing our intellect to seek knowledge, understand His guidance, and make righteous choices, we draw closer to Him. Conversely, neglecting our intellect leads to foolishness, ignorance, and estrangement from Allah. Muslims are encouraged to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge, cultivate wisdom, and strive for closeness to Allah through the proper use of their intellect. May Allah grant us the ability to utilize our intelligence in His obedience and draw closer to Him.
